Chasing Down My Dream

Image
After competing in the NCAA system for a year and a half without doing a draft legal triathlon I was exhausted. Why? I was tired of losing or not even being close. A good race puts me in the top 30 at an event. So I asked coach flowers if I could take a red shirt indoor track season and race a triathlon to get my elite card back. A race that in order to get that card I would need to be one of the best on the day. So I set out to do so,  bumping my one once a week swim and very scarce bike. In order to maximize these I asked Jenny what I would need to do. I took care of the swimming, but she would take over the bike. Two to three times a week I would try to get the fitness I gained previously from miles and miles of biking. Thus, it was time to hop on the computrainer so I could train with power for the first time. With only months to increase my swim and bike while maintaining 100 plus mile running weeks,  I grinded it out. A bike camp in the winter back in Iowa, several ...

I can. I will. I believe.

Pursuit of greatness. Striving to leave a legacy. No matter how I say it, I want to make the most out of what I love to do. I want to inspire those that look up to me. I want to reach my goals and beyond. For the past few years I have taken a different route to improving my triathlon career and risking a lot along the way. Currently racing for the West Texas A&M Buffaloes I have set personal best across the board for running. This past summer I went to Kenya to see what a running culture would do for me. Trying to get everything out of it that I could.  This coming weekend I will take on my first draft legal triathlon since the fall of 2015 when I raced in Magog, Canada as Collegiate Elite racer. I have called it a comeback, but to be honest I don't think that sounds quite right to me. The reason being is that I never gave it up. I have spent miles upon miles working to improve my run so that I can win race when it comes down to it in triathlon. I was not sacrific...

DAW 2016: Find Happiness In The Process

Find The Light In Every Day While I haven't blogged in a while I found that there was no better time to do this post than today. For those of you that don't know this week April 18-24th is National Depression Week. While it seems that every week or day is national something day, this one resonates with me personally. I suffer from depression. It may not seem like it because I truly try each and everyday to find happiness because I believe it is a choice. I win that battle almost every day, but yesterday in impeccable timing it was an uphill battle. Depression is not your fault. The timing is not your fault. I tell myself this every time it hits me hard. As hard as it is to tell myself this, depression must not let me make any choice that I would regret later. Same goes for anyone who suffers from it with me. It will get better. It will always get better. Depression affects more people than you would think and that is why I write this. One part to let those with it know th...

Always a Triton: My final year running for Iowa Central

Image
Always a Triton My final year as a Triton A runner, a swimmer, a triathlete, a nerd, an engineer. These are only some of the many words I would use to describe me. I am constantly searching to find out who I am as a person. What is going to be my future, and what I will have to do to get there. The more I think about it, the more I realize I don't ever have to give up on anything of these things. They are just words used to describe someone, while on the inside is what really determines who you are. On the inside I am a competitive, passionate, and hardworking man, who is stubborn in his ways. Sometimes I win and even more of the time I lose. However, they aren't really losses, but rather lessons or humbling I needed to get where I want to in the future. My past two years at Iowa Central I have matured a ton and have learned about myself. I have been on the edge of glory and the edge of quitting. I have had heartbreaks and successes. I have had setbacks and leaps forw...

A lesson learned: AG Nationals 2014 and Super Sprint Showcase

So I've had a pretty good summer of racing as a whole in my mind. I've had a few times where I would have changed a few things, but no races that were "bad". Nationals and the Super Sprint were rough, and by default two races with in a couple hours of each other should be. However, I could have thought through exactly what I was getting into before the race instead of just banking on my endurance to make doing two races back to back easy. To go along with the double a few other factors were at hand in my race results. Normally Nationals has naturally been my goal peak race of the season, but this year was more about the spread throughout the summer. I wanted to perform at every race I could, and not really focus in on one. So with such a great summer under my belt and cross country season already underway nationals kind of got put on a back burner. The week preceding the race I had cross country camp in northern WI, so I Friday I just had to drive down to Milw...

A Pleasant Surprise: Hy-Vee

My training on the bike and in the water for age group nationals was quite minimal. However compared to Hy-Vee 5150 National Championships it was pretty large, with cross country in full swing I had to focus on running and hadn't swam or bike for 3 weeks. So it came as sort of a relief when they announced it was being cut down to a sprint Triathlon even though I love the added distance usually. So the day before the race was getting back on the horse right before the derby with anytime to really seeing what my fitness levels were in each discipline. I did this with Connor Dilger at the race venue, Beautiful downtown Des Moines at Grey's Lake/Waterworks which I train at all the time. So you could say I had a home field advantage. The ride goes pretty good, my legs move smoothly through the pedal strokes. We get a solid ride in and take our bikes to the bike check in, something I have become familiar this year since moving out of the Junior Ranks. After the ride we aim to go swim...

Take a Breath and Run: Boulder Peak 5150

Image
So with my world record the 18-19th I ran out of time to write this blog and have taken a mental break from that point to now to just focus on training. Now with school started and my brain working again, I am ready to write down my reflection of Boulder Peak 5150 (and nationals soon). This race did not to take as much explaining or thinking as Chicago because it was pretty straight forward what went well and what I need to improve. So here we go on my first race at altitude! The adventure to CO starts Wednesday afternoon where we drive part way and stay at a hotel in Kearney, NE. The hotel was a bit too small for our expanded travel group (my step-mom and two younger brothers came with my dad and I), but we make it work. We hit the road the next morning and arrive in Longmont, CO in the afternoon. The last time I had been driving through CO I was sleeping so I this was my first time really seeking CO breathtaking landscape. Luckily since we arrived early I was able get dropped...
