ITU Magog Sprint Triathlon: A Crazy, Beautiful Mess

Well, that's a wrap. Magog ITU CAMTRI American Cup Sprint Triathlon 2019 (seriously why are all the names so long) was a new experience, despite being in the sport for almost 9 years. I've been a student-athlete for all of those years, even the first few years as a pro, I was a full-time student with a relatively open schedule. Now, I'm a working pro which is different for sure even if the races don't change. With no flights to get me to Magog in a responsible time (or price) from work, I made the last-minute choice to ask my dad (who brought my sister) to drive up with me. We hit the road immediately after I got off work and the hours started ticking by. It was the signature move I've come to adopt. Not sure if it is better or worse on paper...Des Moines U23 Nationals

After Copper Creek I set out to gain a little bit of confidence back before U23 nationals by doing what I love to do. Put in hard work. There is just that amazing feeling when you know day in and out you are exhausting yourself before a rest period to gain the benefits. So my goal was to do just that because I wanted to take advantage of my home course even if I wasn't in ideal swim or bike shape yet I was going to give it my best go. On the last day of hard before the taper down I did a firecracker 5k in Earlam with the WHOLE gang racing! Everyone except my dad who had cheering duties. I was able to take it out in 4:38 and settle into a tempo pace once it was just me at the front which assured me that a few days later I would be better to roll. A great day in general boosted morale for sure as Zach helped push Mags to an almost PR without tapering or really planning for the race. Adversity causes some men to break; others to break records.

The title of this post as quoted by William Arthur Ward is one of my favorite quotes of all time. Not only because it tells us that failures are crucial to success, but it all tells us that sometimes things are going to rough, very rough. However, even if the hard times last for 1, 2, or plenty more races that at some point not giving up on your dreams will be the difference in the end. The beauty is that comebacks happen all the time, and the break through race is just around the corner. This is what I am taking from my freshman year of running in college. I had a few ups, but the downs, lets just say I have plenty to share with others. Coming off of my senior year of high school running career which was a huge leap in the right direction towards being a great runner, I thought that it would just continue to progress so quickly and there was no way I wouldn't get better.
