"An overnight success is 10 years in the making."

ITU CAMTRI American Cup Magog Warning: This is more of a reflection than a race report. Still should be an interesting read! This has been quite a string of rough results. I was so ready to post a breakout race or even just a step in the right direction. Fitness is there, individually all three sports have been going well and feeling better than ever. The puzzle pieces to an amazing race are still being organized. Could it have been the 3 crashes in our pack? Maybe the food poisoning last weekend? Perhaps the mid swim panic attack mid-swim cost me the vital seconds to hit the main pack? What do I think it is? I can't nail it down to an exact reason and I don't want to use them as excuses. I think it goes to a deeper level. Fear. I'm on the edge of failure/success all the time. I put the pressure on myself to excel at every race. I love it all I really do, I'm not a huge fan of "learning" experiences or paying my dues because it's hard. I train with ...

Jack of all trades, master of none.

Training + Focus = Success? Well sort of. One thing that is super important is also adding in consistency over time. This is my second year as a professional and while I'm feeling SOOO much stronger, where are the results? Yes I have had a few successes since breaking out the new strength in my races. Overall though I've been a bit disappointed with what I did at races like Collegiate nationals where I was 21 seconds from winning, but also 9th place. However, there are glimmers of hope in non triathlon races. I was a Drake Relays 10k road champion, I snagged a few solid bike races that included two 2nd place finishes and a breakaway 1st place. What does that tell me, I'm in shape and getting better at each of the individual sports. I believe and trust in my training, just have to realize it will take a little time. That being said I made the choice to stay localish through the month of June when I would normally be racing already at ITU races. I pulled the plug to make sure...

Tick Tick Tick. Sarasota CAMTRI Sprint Continental Cup

Time goes by so quickly and constant in the moment choices can be the difference between an alright race and a great race. Today I was on the wrong side of the deal. When I crossed the finish line it took me a while to figure out what happned. I was tired, I put it out there, felt strong in the swim, bike, and run. Yet my place was from from what it should be and I ran all by myself again. At first glance I was pissed, I thought I had made a difference over the winter. The answer was that I had, but I broke it down to a few minor details in the swim. For the full story keep reading... I woke up at a pretty reasonable hour thanks to my race being at 12:30, plenty of rest under my belt. I stumbled around a bit before getting some run clothes on and heading out on a 2 mile shakeout. I take in how beautiful it is. The trees lean in to almost grab you as the sun kisses your skin. The air temperature is just perfect for running sitting in the mid 50s. The shakeout felt great and before...

A New Perspective

"One has not only an ability to perceive the world but an ability to alter one's perception of it; more simply, one can change things by the manner in which one looks at them." -Tom Robbins In sport or battle when the great end goal is an accumulation of years of practices, how one perceives what is needed can be the difference between a win or lose. On a more basic level it can be the difference between giving in or deciding to stay the course. No I haven't been dormant since my last post, I've had several races then. Some better than others, but all subpar for what I was capable of. What was wrong in these races? One could spend hours speculating. Too many races, too much focus on running, a heightened idea of what I was capable of? Maybe I wasn't cut out for it any more. Doubt began to creep in. Then just like many times in the past I had to take a step back and look at it all of what was going on and had been since I started my rookie year as a full prof...

Throwback to the original Duathlon: Dallas ITU Pro Race

Image
There are some races that go under the radar because of school, weren't what I was looking for, or any host of reasons. Today I thought I would bring back a race report the world never saw before continuing with the rest of my summer reports. This one takes us back to 2015 when I did my first Pro race after earning my Elite card in the Monroe EDR. This race at the time was both exciting and eye opening in many ways. I may have earned my Elite card, but I was (and still am) far from the top despite what I dream. That is the best part, I have so much room to grow and learn. This trip was a father-son adventure as we set off from Iowa in the Grand Caravan which has been on so many trips across the nation. We headed down a week early to get used to the air and weather a bit before competing. As well as not having the travel heavy in the legs. On the way down we make a quick stop at Lake Murray State Park where I do a pre-race fartlek on national running day. The weather beautiful and w...

Not sure if it is better or worse on paper...Des Moines U23 Nationals

Image
After Copper Creek I set out to gain a little bit of confidence back before U23 nationals by doing what I love to do. Put in hard work. There is just that amazing feeling when you know day in and out you are exhausting yourself before a rest period to gain the benefits. So my goal was to do just that because I wanted to take advantage of my home course even if I wasn't in ideal swim or bike shape yet I was going to give it my best go. On the last day of hard before the taper down I did a firecracker 5k in Earlam with the WHOLE gang racing! Everyone except my dad who had cheering duties. I was able to take it out in 4:38 and settle into a tempo pace once it was just me at the front which assured me that a few days later I would be better to roll. A great day in general boosted morale for sure as Zach helped push Mags to an almost PR without tapering or really planning for the race. So we left a happy crew and I was ready to take on some more draft legal action. The days leading up w...

All aboard the pain train-Copper Creek

Image
With Ottawa behind me it was time to get some solid training in for Des Moines CAMTRI U23 National championships, but Copper Creek was the week after....Temptation won in this case as long as I trained through it I would be allowed to do it. With it being less than 15 minutes away it was easy on the body and mind preparation wise. Plus I had several teammates racing including Tamera who raced with me in Ottawa. PRE-RACE: So since this is a race through race the format for pre-race is a bit different. Two days out I had full day with a 9 mile AM run followed by 3000 yds of base work swimming with the crew. In the PM I knock out a 16x200 threshold on the track before relaxing by the pool at Mags. The day before I put on my coaching hat and ride with the Z3 crew. We knock out 25 miles in about an hour and 25 minutes, which is a bit long for me the day before a race on the bike. Afterwards Zach, Mags, and I take advantage of the beautiful day and head to Grey's Lake to grab an open w...
