If it was easy, everyone would do it.

Waco 70.3 was to be my big finish for my 2018 season. So did it live up to the hype? No. Did I give it my all? Hell yes. I debated throwing in the towel several times, but that's not how you get better. I also was actively learning, with each excruciating step. I put myself in a position to work hard and that's what I did. I was battered by 17 other pros who have been doing this for years, and they exposed my weaknesses. I made several changes in the right direction for 2018 versus my first year as a professional. The best part? I have a lot more to make. First, I will break down the race before going into details. The swim: NOT. This won't come as a surprise to those following along, but no swim because of the river being deemed unsafe. This was kind of a bummer because I've been working on it. However, I will get more time to work on it before the next one! 7:50 the first athlete went off, and the next athlete was sent off 30 seconds later.  I was sitting in posi...

Tick Tick Tick. Sarasota CAMTRI Sprint Continental Cup

Time goes by so quickly and constant in the moment choices can be the difference between an alright race and a great race. Today I was on the wrong side of the deal. When I crossed the finish line it took me a while to figure out what happned. I was tired, I put it out there, felt strong in the swim, bike, and run. Yet my place was from from what it should be and I ran all by myself again. At first glance I was pissed, I thought I had made a difference over the winter. The answer was that I had, but I broke it down to a few minor details in the swim. For the full story keep reading... I woke up at a pretty reasonable hour thanks to my race being at 12:30, plenty of rest under my belt. I stumbled around a bit before getting some run clothes on and heading out on a 2 mile shakeout. I take in how beautiful it is. The trees lean in to almost grab you as the sun kisses your skin. The air temperature is just perfect for running sitting in the mid 50s. The shakeout felt great and before...

Throwback to the original Duathlon: Dallas ITU Pro Race

Image
There are some races that go under the radar because of school, weren't what I was looking for, or any host of reasons. Today I thought I would bring back a race report the world never saw before continuing with the rest of my summer reports. This one takes us back to 2015 when I did my first Pro race after earning my Elite card in the Monroe EDR. This race at the time was both exciting and eye opening in many ways. I may have earned my Elite card, but I was (and still am) far from the top despite what I dream. That is the best part, I have so much room to grow and learn. This trip was a father-son adventure as we set off from Iowa in the Grand Caravan which has been on so many trips across the nation. We headed down a week early to get used to the air and weather a bit before competing. As well as not having the travel heavy in the legs. On the way down we make a quick stop at Lake Murray State Park where I do a pre-race fartlek on national running day. The weather beautiful and w...

All aboard the pain train-Copper Creek

Image
With Ottawa behind me it was time to get some solid training in for Des Moines CAMTRI U23 National championships, but Copper Creek was the week after....Temptation won in this case as long as I trained through it I would be allowed to do it. With it being less than 15 minutes away it was easy on the body and mind preparation wise. Plus I had several teammates racing including Tamera who raced with me in Ottawa. PRE-RACE: So since this is a race through race the format for pre-race is a bit different. Two days out I had full day with a 9 mile AM run followed by 3000 yds of base work swimming with the crew. In the PM I knock out a 16x200 threshold on the track before relaxing by the pool at Mags. The day before I put on my coaching hat and ride with the Z3 crew. We knock out 25 miles in about an hour and 25 minutes, which is a bit long for me the day before a race on the bike. Afterwards Zach, Mags, and I take advantage of the beautiful day and head to Grey's Lake to grab an open w...

When all else fails, use your damn legs. Ottawa, Canada Triathlon

If you don't risk it, you will never know. Did I know how I would have finished in my first international race back? I had an idea it could be anywhere from really great to sadly disappointing. I remained positive it was the first one throughout the whole race, but afterwards I look back and see that I really did take a risk with such a big range of possibilities. However, that wasn't what I was worried about leading up to the race. I knew if I got to the race I could give it everything I had. Whatever that was. At this point I had some swimming under my belt with SSST (super secret swim team) and felt excited to finally be racing again after about a month from my last race (Hickory Grove). The day before I took off I had a great run with Mags and gathered some solid inside jokes (to go along with some killer tacos) for my journey alone to Ottawa. My morning comes early as all of my race flights seem to, and I don't opt for the 3am run before  my flight. I get to Ottawa s...

Am I du-ing this right?

Once the plane hit the ground back in Texas after the Clermont EDR race it was full blown track season. With my new Elite card in hand confidence was high and I was crushing workouts. Throwing in bike and swim workouts was on an if there was time and my body allowed it basis. Which is hard while posting 115 miles per week. Before I knew it my racing season was underway and had some solid 1500s and a good 5k under my belt. Lone star champs marked the end of track season, a few weeks of triathlon training down in Texas and it was time to come back to Iowa for the summer. I crushed my first week back and decided I should do Hickory Grove Duathlon. Why a duathlon and not a triathlon you may be asking? Well it was super cold that weekend and I didn't feel my swim was ready honestly. Also after some digging of previous times I decided I wanted the course record. Bold claim for someone who just got back on the bike, but I figured people usually did the triathlon at this race. 5am...

Chasing Down My Dream

Image
After competing in the NCAA system for a year and a half without doing a draft legal triathlon I was exhausted. Why? I was tired of losing or not even being close. A good race puts me in the top 30 at an event. So I asked coach flowers if I could take a red shirt indoor track season and race a triathlon to get my elite card back. A race that in order to get that card I would need to be one of the best on the day. So I set out to do so,  bumping my one once a week swim and very scarce bike. In order to maximize these I asked Jenny what I would need to do. I took care of the swimming, but she would take over the bike. Two to three times a week I would try to get the fitness I gained previously from miles and miles of biking. Thus, it was time to hop on the computrainer so I could train with power for the first time. With only months to increase my swim and bike while maintaining 100 plus mile running weeks,  I grinded it out. A bike camp in the winter back in Iowa, several ...

Take a Breath and Run: Boulder Peak 5150

Image
So with my world record the 18-19th I ran out of time to write this blog and have taken a mental break from that point to now to just focus on training. Now with school started and my brain working again, I am ready to write down my reflection of Boulder Peak 5150 (and nationals soon). This race did not to take as much explaining or thinking as Chicago because it was pretty straight forward what went well and what I need to improve. So here we go on my first race at altitude! The adventure to CO starts Wednesday afternoon where we drive part way and stay at a hotel in Kearney, NE. The hotel was a bit too small for our expanded travel group (my step-mom and two younger brothers came with my dad and I), but we make it work. We hit the road the next morning and arrive in Longmont, CO in the afternoon. The last time I had been driving through CO I was sleeping so I this was my first time really seeking CO breathtaking landscape. Luckily since we arrived early I was able get dropped...

Never Settle:My First Olympic Distance Triathlon

Image
Beautiful Winona, MN is the location of my first Olympic distance triathlon. However, before we get to the race I'm going to start with the events leading up to it. This weeks training leading up to the race was better than last weekends, but still a rough one for me with a few unexpected events coming up. I had some really good runs lately which is really the key to my races. Once I arrive the day before the race, I pick up my packet, listen to the race briefing, and head to the race course to do my pre-race. Upon arrival of the course I am greeted by a beautiful lake with a bluff to match. I snap a quick picture and take it all in before staring my warm up. Lake Winona I warm up all three disciplines without anything out of the ordinary, except a bit of fatigue in my legs. I check out the transition area and finish line quickly before heading off to dinner by myself. I enjoy some of the local food and head over to my gracious host family Kevin and Beth Anne Feine. Special shout o...

Rhythm and Racing: A Double For The Books

Image
So as I finish up my first weekend of racing this summer I have mixed feelings all over the board from bad to good. I started the weekend a little bit nervous that my performances would wouldn't be up to par because of being very sluggish at the beginning of the week, along with a "tempo" run that was far from my normal on Monday and not in the right direction. However, ultimately the disipline I was most worried about is my strength so I mentally over powered the sluggishness starting with the Dam to Dam 5k on Saturday. I woke up that morning feeling slightly better than I had the previous days. I had the night in downtown Des Moinesjust  blocks away from the start of my race. So with no rush I throw on my running uniform and head out for a warm up. It is a pretty warm and muggy morning, so I am able to break a sweat easy during my warm up and stretches. This is perfect because being sluggish I knew the start of the race would be harder due to taking a bit longer to get ...
