Throwback to the original Duathlon: Dallas ITU Pro Race

Image
There are some races that go under the radar because of school, weren't what I was looking for, or any host of reasons. Today I thought I would bring back a race report the world never saw before continuing with the rest of my summer reports. This one takes us back to 2015 when I did my first Pro race after earning my Elite card in the Monroe EDR. This race at the time was both exciting and eye opening in many ways. I may have earned my Elite card, but I was (and still am) far from the top despite what I dream. That is the best part, I have so much room to grow and learn. This trip was a father-son adventure as we set off from Iowa in the Grand Caravan which has been on so many trips across the nation. We headed down a week early to get used to the air and weather a bit before competing. As well as not having the travel heavy in the legs. On the way down we make a quick stop at Lake Murray State Park where I do a pre-race fartlek on national running day. The weather beautiful and w...

Not sure if it is better or worse on paper...Des Moines U23 Nationals

Image
After Copper Creek I set out to gain a little bit of confidence back before U23 nationals by doing what I love to do. Put in hard work. There is just that amazing feeling when you know day in and out you are exhausting yourself before a rest period to gain the benefits. So my goal was to do just that because I wanted to take advantage of my home course even if I wasn't in ideal swim or bike shape yet I was going to give it my best go. On the last day of hard before the taper down I did a firecracker 5k in Earlam with the WHOLE gang racing! Everyone except my dad who had cheering duties. I was able to take it out in 4:38 and settle into a tempo pace once it was just me at the front which assured me that a few days later I would be better to roll. A great day in general boosted morale for sure as Zach helped push Mags to an almost PR without tapering or really planning for the race. So we left a happy crew and I was ready to take on some more draft legal action. The days leading up w...

All aboard the pain train-Copper Creek

Image
With Ottawa behind me it was time to get some solid training in for Des Moines CAMTRI U23 National championships, but Copper Creek was the week after....Temptation won in this case as long as I trained through it I would be allowed to do it. With it being less than 15 minutes away it was easy on the body and mind preparation wise. Plus I had several teammates racing including Tamera who raced with me in Ottawa. PRE-RACE: So since this is a race through race the format for pre-race is a bit different. Two days out I had full day with a 9 mile AM run followed by 3000 yds of base work swimming with the crew. In the PM I knock out a 16x200 threshold on the track before relaxing by the pool at Mags. The day before I put on my coaching hat and ride with the Z3 crew. We knock out 25 miles in about an hour and 25 minutes, which is a bit long for me the day before a race on the bike. Afterwards Zach, Mags, and I take advantage of the beautiful day and head to Grey's Lake to grab an open w...

When all else fails, use your damn legs. Ottawa, Canada Triathlon

Image
If you don't risk it, you will never know. Did I know how I would have finished in my first international race back? I had an idea it could be anywhere from really great to sadly disappointing. I remained positive it was the first one throughout the whole race, but afterwards I look back and see that I really did take a risk with such a big range of possibilities. However, that wasn't what I was worried about leading up to the race. I knew if I got to the race I could give it everything I had. Whatever that was. At this point I had some swimming under my belt with SSST (super secret swim team) and felt excited to finally be racing again after about a month from my last race (Hickory Grove). The day before I took off I had a great run with Mags and gathered some solid inside jokes (to go along with some killer tacos) for my journey alone to Ottawa. My morning comes early as all of my race flights seem to, and I don't opt for the 3am run before  my flight. I get to Ottawa s...

Am I du-ing this right?

Once the plane hit the ground back in Texas after the Clermont EDR race it was full blown track season. With my new Elite card in hand confidence was high and I was crushing workouts. Throwing in bike and swim workouts was on an if there was time and my body allowed it basis. Which is hard while posting 115 miles per week. Before I knew it my racing season was underway and had some solid 1500s and a good 5k under my belt. Lone star champs marked the end of track season, a few weeks of triathlon training down in Texas and it was time to come back to Iowa for the summer. I crushed my first week back and decided I should do Hickory Grove Duathlon. Why a duathlon and not a triathlon you may be asking? Well it was super cold that weekend and I didn't feel my swim was ready honestly. Also after some digging of previous times I decided I wanted the course record. Bold claim for someone who just got back on the bike, but I figured people usually did the triathlon at this race. 5am...

Chasing Down My Dream

Image
After competing in the NCAA system for a year and a half without doing a draft legal triathlon I was exhausted. Why? I was tired of losing or not even being close. A good race puts me in the top 30 at an event. So I asked coach flowers if I could take a red shirt indoor track season and race a triathlon to get my elite card back. A race that in order to get that card I would need to be one of the best on the day. So I set out to do so,  bumping my one once a week swim and very scarce bike. In order to maximize these I asked Jenny what I would need to do. I took care of the swimming, but she would take over the bike. Two to three times a week I would try to get the fitness I gained previously from miles and miles of biking. Thus, it was time to hop on the computrainer so I could train with power for the first time. With only months to increase my swim and bike while maintaining 100 plus mile running weeks,  I grinded it out. A bike camp in the winter back in Iowa, several ...

I can. I will. I believe.

Pursuit of greatness. Striving to leave a legacy. No matter how I say it, I want to make the most out of what I love to do. I want to inspire those that look up to me. I want to reach my goals and beyond. For the past few years I have taken a different route to improving my triathlon career and risking a lot along the way. Currently racing for the West Texas A&M Buffaloes I have set personal best across the board for running. This past summer I went to Kenya to see what a running culture would do for me. Trying to get everything out of it that I could.  This coming weekend I will take on my first draft legal triathlon since the fall of 2015 when I raced in Magog, Canada as Collegiate Elite racer. I have called it a comeback, but to be honest I don't think that sounds quite right to me. The reason being is that I never gave it up. I have spent miles upon miles working to improve my run so that I can win race when it comes down to it in triathlon. I was not sacrific...
