California International Marathon- A new kind of pain

Image
December 8th 2019 I completed my first marathon. However, the race started 14 weeks when I was on my way back from Santa Cruz 70.3. I’ve been a distance runner for years, and in the past 3 years I’ve been competing at the professional level. I’ve done races all across the board between swimming, biking, and running at plenty of distances. Yet there were two distances that I deemed as too far, or not really my type because of the speed I still have in my legs. Something after Santa Cruz changed in regard to one of them. For years I had said I would do a marathon once I was under 1:10 in the half marathon, but after hitting time and time again I wasn’t pulling the trigger on actually doing one. I knew they would put me out of commission for a while due to the shear impact that occurs during, but ultimately I think I was scared it would be much harder than anticipated. That changed when I completed my first full 70.3 and had a decent run to finish up the day. I realized that I knew wh...

Santa Cruz 70.3 - Now that's more like it.

Countdowns to racing always seem so far away until all of the sudden they are right smack dab in front of you. Especially big ones. 8 weeks separated the Magog ITU CAMTRI American Cup race and the Santa Cruz 70.3 race. However with plenty to keep me busy, it didn't really hit me until this week. A mini panic that I wasn't was quickly put to rest when I looked back at the work I did, and numbers of hours I put in. I need not worry, plus what good does worrying about something the week of do? With no more fitness to be made I took the week pretty light as this was to be my peak triathlon for the season. It technically also was my first full 70.3 race, since Waco's swim being cancelled last year. Still I could aim to improve from what at the time was one of the roughest finishes to a race I've had. Which is saying a lot because I've put myself out there quite often in race. (This is just a nice way of saying I go out too fast) With Waco in the back of my mind over the...

ITU Magog Sprint Triathlon: A Crazy, Beautiful Mess

Well, that's a wrap. Magog ITU CAMTRI American Cup Sprint Triathlon 2019 (seriously why are all the names so long) was a new experience, despite being in the sport for almost 9 years. I've been a student-athlete for all of those years, even the first few years as a pro, I was a full-time student with a relatively open schedule. Now, I'm a working pro which is different for sure even if the races don't change. With no flights to get me to Magog in a responsible time (or price) from work, I made the last-minute choice to ask my dad (who brought my sister) to drive up with me. We hit the road immediately after I got off work and the hours started ticking by. It was the signature move I've come to adopt. One race a year, drive too many miles, then arrive just in time for a bit of pre-race activity before the meeting. This time, the drive seemed to have more of an effect on me than usual. Maybe it was the extra hours that were added on due to poor driving skills by o...
